Fuerza y Orgullo: Meet the 2022/2023 Cohort!
We're excited to welcome a group of emerging activists to our media and advocacy cohort for 2022/2023! This amazing group of people are already making an impact in their local communities across the South and will be participating in workshops about storytelling as a form of advocacy. Meet them below!
Hammond, LA | Mi nombre es Alessandra lopez murillo nací el 08 de junio de 1991 soy originaria de Honduras 🇭🇳 desde mi niñez me sentí diferente sentí que no estaba en el cuerpo correcto y me atraían mucho las cosas de niña así que el crecer en un país machista fue algo muy duro por que no podía ser quien quería ser en mi juventud no conocí de protección sexual entre muchas otras cosas más y sin que nadie me diera a hablar esos temas me enfrenté a la policía por defender a mis amigas ,hermanas mi comunidad trans 🏳️⚧️ siempre he sido callada pero en momento de defenderme o defender a mi comunidad LGBTQ 🏳️🌈 y Trans 🏳️⚧️ me veía como una leona cuando cuida a sus cachorros al tiempo qué pasó los años en 2018 partí de mi país si que nadie supiera huyendo de la violencia, el racismo y sobretodo la discriminación y llegue a Estados Unidos estando aquí creamos un proyecto llamado (Amor y Solidaridad) el cual ayudó a recibir al algunos a ser recibidos de lo que vienen huyendo y pues desde entonces he estado aquí luchando para lograr abrir caminos que la futura niñez de LGBTQ 🏳️🌈 🏳️⚧️ y no sufran lo que muchas y muchos y muches sufrimos.
Birmingham, AL | Alexander Bautista was born and raised in Tabasco, Mexico. Currently he serves as a Program Manager for the LGBTQ+Latinx in the state of Alabama. He received his Bachelors from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his Masters degree from the University of Alabama. Mr. Bautista is currently working on his doctorate at the University of Southern Mississippi, his research focus on access to education for LGBTQ+ Latinos.
Atlanta, GA | A woman who is motivated by art and creativity, Amore demonstrates her passion and intelligence for our LatinX community and LGBTQIA+ family/allies in the form of planning, organizing, and preparing projects and events with the intention of showing serenity and unity among our own community and to teach that a change can be made when the people are united as one inclusive group with the intent of achieving one common goal, which is to bring forth a change for a better tomorrow.
Georgia | Aubri Escalera is a Mexican National raised in United States of America . Aubri is an activist for transgender rights and immigrant rights. Aubri’s focus is improving the living conditions and protecting the identities of our TGNC communities within Gender Identity Laws . Aubri is an active Trans Leader in the Savannah South East Atlanta area and Proud Immigrant voice for our LGBTQIA+ families and allies . Currently also a legislative aide for representative Park Cannon district 58 and Future Executive Director for our community.
Cleveland,MS | Jess Manrriquez is a queer, non-binary Chicanx educator specializing in the pre-Columbian Southeast. They have over a decade of experience in grassroots queer and racial justice movement work in Mississippi and throughout the southeast. Jess is dedicated to uplifting and making space for marginalized folks and tearing down systems of oppression. Sun/Moon in Cancer and rising Leo.
Mississippi | My name is Jesus Acosta, and I'm a lifelong Mississippi resident. Previously a business administrator, I'm now currently the Development Lead for the Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity (IAJE). A member of the Latinx, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities, I believe that building leadership in underserved, underrepresented communities is the key to self-determination and liberation. My leadership skills have grown through my work at IAJE, and I dream of a more just and equitable Mississippi for all.
Altanta, GA | Kameron Leonel hombre trans de 22 años activista desde los 16 años y Ex miembro de organización hombres trans el salvador ya que inmigro a EEUU hace un año por un futuro mejor ya que en su país no hay apoyo hacia la comunidad LGTBIQ+. Con el deseo de expandir sus conocimientos sobre temas y apoyos y bases comunitarias hacia nuestra comunidad y en busca de ser un futuro líder y apoyo para toda las personas que están pasando en la actualidad en los estados unidos. Dando siempre su compromiso en seguir aprendiendo sobre temas de defensas y resolución de problemas. Está completamente comprometido en dar todo de él en compromiso, dedicación, preparación y responsabilidad con tal de llegar ser un líder para beneficio para toda nuestra comunidad.
Durham, NC | Soy orgullosamente originario de El Salvador, llegue a los Estados Unidos 5 años atrás, soy un inmigrante indocumentado, queer y activista con amor por las causas sociales y la justicia social.
